Planning Your Wedding Day Around the Light

Why the most important line in your timeline is the one that says “sunset.”

Light matters more than any lens or camera body we own, so when couples ask how to get the most out of their photographs, we start with the timeline.

Find your sunset time first and work backward. We like to schedule a short portrait window about forty-five minutes before sunset. The light is warm and soft, and it wraps around faces instead of carving shadows into them.

If your ceremony lands in the harsh midday sun, don't panic. Open shade, like a tree line, a porch or the north side of a building, gives beautiful, even light. We'll scout it before the day.

Finally, leave a little slack. The best photographs rarely happen on schedule. A ten-minute buffer is often the difference between rushed and radiant.
